Val-d'Or (Sullivan)

A Mining City

The municipality of Sullivan was created only in 1972, on May 13 to be more precise. This city owes its name to Jos Sullivan, the first person to discover a gold deposit at lac De Montigny. Indeed, Val d’Or abounds with mineral deposits, and since giving towns a name related to the mining industry was a common thing to do, that is what Sullivan did. In addition to the mines, of which one was named Sullivan Consolidated, there are also several water bodies in the municipality.

Nowadays, this municipality no longer exists. Because of the merging of cities over the past years, the municipality of Sullivan was merged with Val-Senneville, Dubuisson, Vassan and Val d’Or on January 1st, 2002 to create the new city of Val d’Or. To this date, the name Sullivan is still used to identify the area corresponding to its former territory.
